Working out at home has several advantages. It’s a lot more convenient, you can potentially save a lot of time and money, plus you get to choose your own music and amenities.
However, for all of the advantages, there are also several significant challenges that come from working out at home. But don’t worry, because I’ve got your back with these five tips to help you maximize your home workouts.
1. MAINTAIN A HOME WORKOUT SPACE
Clutter and neglect are two of the greatest threats to your workout environment. If your environment becomes messy and neglected chances are your workouts will be soon to follow.
This is why it’s incredibly important to set up, and maintain, a dedicated space you can workout in. It doesn’t need to be fancy or even big. It could be just a corner of your bedroom with a yoga mat and maybe a couple of dumbbells. Just be sure to have a dedicated space for consistent training.
2. SET UP A WEEKLY TRAINING ROUTINE
Just as you need a consistent place to work out, you need a consistent workout schedule. Working out at home can easily become a random and haphazard affair due to the changes in daily life. It’s very almost impossible to make any sort of progress when your plan is to workout whenever you can.
This is why I recommend creating a weekly workout routine and stick to it as well as you can. Sure, you can make changes as life warrants because working out at home does give you some flexibility. However, it’s best to make these changes only as necessary.
3. USE “DELTA” EQUIPMENT
Efficiency and versatility are the keys to getting the most out of your home gym workouts. Methods that are “Delta” are simple and require few resources while providing outstanding versatility and benefits.
One of my favorite examples is a suspension trainer or gymnastics rings. These take up very little space yet give you a whole gym worth of exercises.
When it comes to free weights, it’s hard to beat hand weights like dumbbells and kettlebells. And if cardio is your thing, I always recommend working with a belt driven stationary bike. Those types of bikes are very solid, offer a great work out, but are very space efficient while being whisper quiet.
Don’t forget, you can also get a great cardio workout with a simple jump rope and circuit training your body weight and basic free weight exercises.
4. TRAIN YOUR BRAIN
Learning new information is the heart of Progression. Unfortunately, it can be very easy to get stuck doing things the same way for years when you workout at home.
This is why it’s just as important to train your mind as it is your body by learning new information. It’s easy to learn these days with videos, and podcasts to give you something new to work on every single week.
5. FIND IN-PERSON SUPPORT
Getting in shape is incredibly difficult, if not impossible, to do on your own. Having some form of in-person support can make all the difference in the world.
You can find it in home personal trainers who’ll visit you once or twice a week to offer accountability, encouragement, and education. You can also find support with meet up groups in your local area or simply invite friends and family to join you on your journey.
These simple tips can significantly improve your chances of success without having to ever step foot in a commercial gym. The conveniences of working out at home are fantastic and now you stand an even greater chance of making progress.
